Palestine laws historically were based on the laws and customs of the Ottoman Empire. The laws in Palestine were under the domination of the customary and sharia rules. Jordan was the ruler of West Bank including Jerusalem from 1948 to 1967. On the other hand Gaza was under the domination of Egypt.
But as of now, the Palestine laws are divided into two. The personal status of the Muslims in the West Bank is administered by the law of Jordan. While, the Muslims living in the east Jerusalem are under the law of the sharia rules of Israel. The Muslims living in the Gaza strip are under the domination of the personal status law of the Egyptian administrative system.
The Christian communities having gained their recognition in Palestine have their own personal status laws. The court system in Palestine consists of regular courts and High Court having appellate jurisdiction in cases of civil and criminal cases. Personal status laws are implemented by the sharia courts in both West Bank and Gaza strip.
There are a number of good lawyers in Palestine who also deal with cases related to insurance, banking, litigation, commercial laws, corporate laws, etc. Nabil Mushahwar and Rabie Hussein are two notable lawyers of Palestine.
