Palestinian music is diverse with many dimensions. The popular commercial music is very popular all throughout the Arab world. These different types of music reach the people of Palestine through music stores, radio, TV channels and home stereos and have become an integral part of their everyday life. The old popular music is still enjoyed and is played in folk dances, festivals, social functions and at weddings. The local musical scholars and performers have been striving hard to preserve the traditions of Palestinian music.
Some of the legendary singers and musicians of Palestine are Mohammad Abdul Latif al Ashhab, Ahmad Abu Ghannam (Abu Farid), Hatem al-Afghani, Mohammad Abu Khater and many more.
In the nineteen seventies two types of bands were popular in Palestine: the westernized bands and Eastern bands. The westernized bands in Palestine used western instruments and also played western music and the Eastern bands used eastern instruments and used to play eastern music and used to sing eastern songs.
In 1980, a band was established that was called Sabreen, which meant "patience" in Arabic language.
This band in Palestine has composed three recordings namely Mout an-Nabi ("Death of the Prophet"), As-Sumud ("Steadfast") and Dukhan al-Barakeen ("Smoke of the Volcanoes"). The band has also produced soundtracks for numerous documentaries and films like Love Divided and Canticle of Stones.
