Polo is another sport played in Pakistan. Besides other sports, Polo in Pakistan also occupies a significant place. Polo in Pakistan is regarded as a traditional sport. Though the most famous games are cricket, hockey and squash, Polo is played in the country. It is believed that Polo had its origin in Central Asia. In Central Asia it has been a crucial sport. Here many polo competitions are held every year.
Pakistan organizes the Shandur Polo Tournament. This tournament is held in the month of June. Many tourists and spectators come to Gilgit and Chitral situated in northern side of Pakistan. This Polo tournament started in 1920s. The main of this event was to integrate Britishers and the different groups of people. The main location of Shandur Polo Tournament was Shandur Pass. Shandur Pass is regarded as the highest polo ground of the world. Shandur Pass is about 11,000 feet above the level of the sea. In the tournament the rules that are followed go back to 800 years. The Genghis Khan's descendant made the rules of the polo game played here. But it is considered that the rules were very loose. These at times also leads to anarchy. Again many polo players gets injured and even faces death while the tournament is going on.
Some of the other polo events held around the year are in November, Uprising Day Polo Tournament held in Gilgit. During August Pakistan Independence Day Polo tournament is held in Skardu. The Northern parts of Pakistan are famous for polo. One such place is Chitral.
Thus polo in Pakistan is famous besides the other sports played in the country.
