Beijing Summer Games – Transportation Plan

With the Beijing Summer Games 2008 less than 200 days away, the Beijing Municipal Transportation Corporation has unveiled an elaborate Beijing Summer Games – transportation plan for the benefit of the thousands of spectators.

The Beijing Municipal Transportation Corporation (BMTC) has drawn up an elaborate Beijing Summer Games – transportation plan to meet the influx of visitors during the 2008 Beijing Summer Games. It has also been decided that during the tenure of the event, more than 50% of the city’s private vehicles will be barred from the roads.

The BMTC are hiring around 33,000 drivers and transport personnel especially for the 2008 Summer Games. According to the plan, there would be 34 special bus routes out of which 7 will be operational for 24 hours. In addition to this 173 shuttle lines will also be in place. According to latest estimates, the number of vehicles plying on the roads of Beijing during the 2008 Summer Olympics is expected to cross 3.3 million. These lines have been planned keeping in mind that the smooth flowing of traffic is not hampered.

The number of underground trains is also being increased keeping in mind that a large chunk of the visitors will be availing this service. The interval between stations is also set to be reduced.

The transportation services for the Beijing Summer Games 2008 have been classified into 5 categories, ranging from T1 to T5. The services will cater to the International Olympic Committee members, athletes, officials of the team, technicians, supporting staff, accredited media personnel, volunteers and spectators. While T1 has been earmarked for the IOC President and its members, the T5 category can be availed by the spectators and support staff. The transportation will be provided free of cost.
