General Facts about Olympics
  • Olympics started in Ancient Greece and has many stories associated with it. The most popular of them is that the Hercales the son of God Zeus was the first to run the race in Olympia and gave it the name of Olympics and proclaiimed these games to be held once in four years.
  • IOC (International Olympics Committee) gives a specific city the honor of hosting the event rather than a country.
  • Gold medals were of pure gold 100 years ago. It was last in 1912 Olympics when pure gold medals were awarded.
  • It was in 1908 London when Olympics first Opening Ceremony was held.
  • The Olympics Flag has 5 ring in different colors, the colors were chosen such that the flags of all the countries have atleast one of these colors.
  • In 1936 the event was televised for the first time, it took place in Berlin
  • Earlier the games were open only for male participants, the first ever women participation in took place 1900 Paris Olympics.
  • London 1908 Olympics lasted for 187 days starting from 27th April to 31st October.
  • In 1916, 1940 and 1944 Olympics did not take place because of World War I and II.
  • Olympiad is a unit of time used to measure a period of 4 years.
