Founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in the year 1962, the Special Olympics give the people with intellectual disabilities a chance to develop their self confidence. It is said that her sister Rosemary Kennedy, who also had some intellectual disability, was the inspiration for Shriver in the introduction of this game. The Special Olympics is said to be an organization, who organize a large number of activities, including the Special Olympics every four years.
The Special Summer Games was developed from the sports camps, known as Camp Shriver. After the first International Special Summer Games in the year 1968 in Chicago in the United States of America, the Special Olympics was expanded to the Winter Special Olympics, which was held in Steamboat Springs in the United States of America in February 1977. The Special Olympics was also recognized by the IOC or the International Olympic Committee in the year 1988.
A large number of athletes from across the globe participate in the Special Olympics, which is held every four years. It includes 26 Olympic type games. The numbers of participants in the Special Olympics range around two million. They hail from more than 150 different countries. The Special Olympics have created an opportunity for the mentally challenged people to show their mettle.
