Olympic Records in Weightlifting

Olympic Weightlifting:Halil Mutlu, Taner Sagir, Hossein Rezazadeh, and Nurcan Tylan are considered as legendry weightlifters, who have won gold medal and hold several Olympic records in weightlifting.

Weightlifting is defined as lifting of heavy weight in a prescribed manner as an exercise or athletic competition. In this sport, competitors attempt to lift heavy weights mounted on steel bars called barbells. The two main events are – the snatch, in which the barbell is lifted from the floor to arm’s length overhead in a single motion; and the clean and jerk, in which the lifter hoists the bar temporarily to the shoulder, pauses and then jerk the barbell to a position at arm’s length overhead. Weightlifting sports not only train the athlete for functional and mental strength but also help him improve his concentration, skill and will power.

Weightlifting was included in the first modern Summer Games in 1896 Summer Games. Women were allowed to participate for the first time in 2000. Initially, Olympic weightlifting were comprised of three disciplines – press, snatch and clean-and-jerk. But in 1972, the press was abolished, leaving the snatch and clean and jerk as the two events for the Olympic competition.

Before declaring weightlifting results, each lifter can have a maximum of three lifts, regardless of whether lifts are successful or not. The lifter who lifted the heaviest weight is declared as winner by a panel of three judges. The competitors are separated into categories according to their body weight. They have to weigh in before the event.
