The wrestlers attempt to win over each other with the use of various wrestling techniques including clinching, holding, locking and leverage. The wrestling techniques are based on the military hand to hand combat or self defense systems. Wrestling had been introduced in the Summer Games over a hundred years ago. The game features a number of styles including Greco-Roman Wrestling, Freestyle wrestling, Grappling, Beach wrestling and Sambo.
With the beginning of professional wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling and Freestyle wrestling became popular. The event was hosted for the first time in the 1896 Summer Games. The women freestyle wrestling was introduced to the international arena in the 2004 Summer Games.
