Career: Earvin Johnson, Jr., famously known as Magic Johnson is considered to be one of the best passers and best point guards in the history of basketball. At an age of 15, Johnson earned his nickname “Magic” for his performance. Championships at the high school, collegiate, professional and international levels have been won by Johnson in his basketball career. In 1979, Johnson led his team to win the NCAA Championships. Turning professional in the same year, he joined the Los Angeles Lakers. Johnson played for thirteen seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. He won five NBA Championships in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988. In his career with the Los Angeles Lakers, Johnson was selected for NBA All-Star team for twelve times in 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992. He was chosen as the NBA League Most valuable Player for three times in 1987, 1989 and 1990. In 1991, Johnson announced that he was HIV-positive and would retire from the Los Angeles Lakers. However, he returned to the final All-Star Game of his career in 1992. His team won the game and Johnson was once again chosen for the All-Star Most Valuable Player award. Magic Johnson was selected in the U.S. “Dream Team” for the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games . In the 1992 Summer Olympics, the U.S. Dream team won the Olympic title. After the Games, Johnson announced his comeback in 1992-'93 season. However, he opted out as a consequence of some personal problems. Twice more he made brief returns to the game. Finally, Johnson retired from the professional basketball in 1996. In the late 90s, Johnson appeared at the court mostly in charity games. In 2006, Johnson appeared in his Los Angeles Lakers uniform after a long gap since 1996.
Performance at the Olympics: NBA professionals were allowed to participate in the Summer Games in 1989. In the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games , the United States fielded a dream team consisting of NBA Stars. Magic Johnson was honored with the position of co-captain along with Larry Bird. The team straight away won all the games in the competition with the average winning margin of 43.75 points. The US Dream Team set an Olympic record with an average of 117.25 points per game scoring above 100 points in each of the eight games played during the competition.
