Career: Susi Susanti dominated the women's singles badminton event in the early 1990s. She was the winner of the All-England title in 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1994. Susanti won the World Grand Prix title for five consecutive years between 1990 and 1994. Susanti participated in the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games . In the Games, badminton was introduced to the Olympic schedule. Susanti won the first Olympic women's singles badminton title. It was also the first Olympic gold medal won by any Indonesian athlete. In 1993, she won the World Badminton Championships title. The Indonesian team won the 1994 and 1996 Uber Cup under the leadership of Susanti. In her next appearance at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games , she won bronze medal in the women's singles competition.
Performance at the Olympics: Badminton was included in the Olympics program in the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games . Susi Susanti competed in the women's singles badminton competition in the Games. Susanti won gold medal in the event to become the first Indonesian athlete to win an Olympic title. In the final, she had a tough competition with Bang Soo-hyun of Korea. In spite of losing the first game to Soo-hyun, Susanti went on to win the Olympic title winning the second and third games. In the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games , she won bronze medal in the singles competition. This time she defeated Kim Ji-hyun of Korea.
