Career: Florence Griffith-Joyner started running at an early age of seven. She finished in the fourth place in the 1983 World Championships. Griffith's first appearance at the Olympic track was in the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games . In the competition Griffith ended up winning silver medal in the 200 meter sprint event. In the 1987 World Championships, she won another silver medal in the 200 meter event. She became renowned as a 200 meter runner. In 1988, Griffith set a new world record in the 100 meter event during the US Olympic Trials. She reached the finishing line in 10.49 seconds at the 100 meter quarter finals. Griffith entered into the 1988 Seoul Olympics as a favorite for gold in the sprint events. She won gold medals in both the 100 meter and 200 meter sprint events. She set new world records in the events. The records are still unbeaten. Griffith also competed in the 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relay events. In the 4x100 meter relay her team won gold medal and in the 4x400 meter relay event, the team won silver medal. Griffith was given the James E. Sullivan Award in 1988. After her Olympic victories, Griffith retired from competitive track and field athletics. She died on 21 st September in 1998.
Performance at the Olympics: Florence Griffith-Joyner participated at the Olympics competition for the first time in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics . In the competition, Griffith won silver medal in the 200 meter sprint event. However, she became more famous for her long painted nails. In her next appearance in the 1988 Seoul Summer Games , Griffith won gold medals in the 100 meter and 200 meter sprint events. In the 100 meter event, she broke the Olympic record twice and set a new record of 10.54 seconds in the final. Griffith also set a new world record in the 200 meter event with a timing of 21.34 seconds. In the 4x100 meter relay event Griffith was a member of the champion team. Her team also won silver medal in the 4x400 meter relay event.
