Career: Mathew Biondi started his aquatics career as a swimmer and water polo player in Moraga, California. His incredible abilities as a swimmer emerged as he moved to his teens. However, Biondi did not start swimming year-round until he was at Campolindo High School. There he was the top sprinter swimmer with a National High School record in the 50 yard freestyle event. In 1984, Biondi qualified for the US 4X100 meter freestyle relay team for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. There the US team won the Olympic title. The first individual swimming world record was made by Biondi in 1985. He was the first man to swim the 100-meter freestyle faster than 49 seconds. By 1988, Biondi owned the record of ten fastest times in that event. He won a total of 24 U.S. Championships in the 50 meter, 100 meter, 200 meter freestyle events, and 100 meter butterfly event. In two World Championships in 1986 and 1991, Biondi won 11 medals including six Gold. In his swimming career, Biondi had received many awards—the UPI Sportsman of the year, the USOC Sportsman of the year and the Swimming World magazine Male Swimmer of the World in 1986 and 1988. He was also the Sullivan Award finalist. Biondi is also a member of the United States Olympic Hall of Fame and International Swimming Hall of Fame.
Performance at the Olympics: Matt Biondi was the US Olympic swimmer in the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Summer Games. He won a total of 11 medals in the Summer Olympics. In the 1988 Summer Games, Biondi became the second swimmer after Mark Spitz, to hold seven swimming titles in one Olympics. He won five Gold medals, one silver and one bronze medal in the swimming events. Biondi set world records in four of the events in which he won Gold medals in the Games. In his Olympic swimming career, Biondi has won eight Gold medals.
