  • Career: Janet Evans started her career of competitive swimming at an early age. Evans was already setting National Age Group records in the longer events at the age of 11. 1987 saw her breaking the world records in the 400 meter, 800 meter and 1500 meter freestyle events. Evans' first appearance at the Olympic competition was in the 1988 Seoul Summer Games . In the Games, she set a new world record in the 400 meter freestyle event. This record remained unbroken for 18 years. Her performance in the 1988 Olympics earned her three gold medals. Evans' dominance in the field of distant swimming continued after her Olympic title winning performance in the 1988 Games. In 1989, Evans set world records in the 800 meter and 1500 meter freestyle events. She still holds these records. Evans became the winner in the 400meter and 800meter freestyle events at the U.S. National Championships for twelve times each. Evans participated in the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games , which was her second appearance at the competition. This time she won one gold and one silver medal in the swimming events. She became the first woman to win back-to-back Olympic And World Championships title in any event. Between 1986 and 1995, Janet Evans won 25 out of 27 major international swimming competitions in the 400meter freestyle event and 22 out of 23 in the 800meter freestyle event. Evans' swimming career ended at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games . this time, she could not win any medal in the competition. In the same Games, she was honored as an Olympic Torch bearer. Evans ended her career with six U.S. records, three world records, 45 U.S. national titles and five Olympic medals including four gold medals.

    Performance at the Olympics: Janet Evans participated at the 1988 Seoul Olympics at an age of 17. in the Games, Evans won gold medal in the 400 meter individual medley event. She also won the 400 meter freestyle swimming competition. In the event, Evans broke her own world record by 1.6 seconds. In the 800 meter freestyle competition, Evans defeated Astrid Strauss of East Germany by nearly three metres. In the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games , she won silver medal in the 400 meter freestyle swimming event losing to Dagmar Hase of Germany. However, in the 800 meter freestyle swimming competition, Evans successfully defended her Olympic title. Evans competed in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics for the last time. In the 1996 competition, Evans could not win any medal. She finished the 800 meter freestyle swimming competition in the sixth place and did not qualify for the 400 meter freestyle finals.
