Career: Louganis became most famous in the world of aquatics because of his achievements in the 3 meter springboard and 10 meter platform events in the Summer Games. At the age of 16, Louganis participated in the 1976 Montreal Summer Games . In the Games, he won silver medal in the 10 meter platform diving event. In 1978, Louganis won the first world title of his career in the event. Louganis was the top contender for gold in the 3 meter springboard and 10 meter platform diving events in the 1980 Moscow Olympics. However because of the American boycott of the Games, he could not compete in the Games. In 1982, Louganis won two world titles in the diving competition. He participated in the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games . This time he won gold medals in the 3 meter springboard and the 10 meter platform events. In 1986 World Championships, he won two more titles in the diving competition. In the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics , Louganis successfully defended his titles in the 3 meter and 10 meter diving events. He had an accident during the 3 meter springboard competition. In one of his jumps in the event, Louganis had a collision with the diving board. In spite of his injury, he went on to win gold medal in the event.
