Synchronized Swimming —Olympics: Synchronized swimming is originally known as water ballet . Synchronized swimming is a hybrid of swimming, gymnastics and ballet . This sport originated in Canada in the 1920s .

Synchronized Swimming in the Summer Games: Synchronized swimming was introduced in the Summer Games as an exhibition sport in 1948. The sport got the status of a full medal sport in the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games. Synchronized swimming is a women's only event in the Olympics ' schedule. Female swimmers participate in two events —the duet competition and the team competition . There are two separate routine for both the events —a technical routine and a free routine . Both the routines are performed with music within a limit of time.

Synchronized Swimming at the 2008 Summer Games: At the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, China , the synchronized swimming events will be held from 17 th August to 22 nd August . The finals of the event are scheduled on 19 th and 22 nd August. The synchronized swimming events will take place at the Beijing National Aquatics Centre, Olympic Green in the Chaoyang District . 2 gold medals will be in contention for the Olympic synchronized swimming competition . The United States, Canada and Japan have been the leading countries in the field of synchronized swimming from 1984 to 1996 . However, Russia has been dominating the sport , winning every event in the 2000 and 2004 Summer Games .
