Fencing —Olympics: Fencing is the art of armed combat fought with swords , knives , pikes , bayonets , clubs etc. In the present day, fencing mainly refers to the European school of swordsmanship and the sport evolved from them.

Fencing in the Summer Games: Fencing was included in the Olympics' schedule in the 1896 Summer Games in Athens . Since then, the sport has been a regular part of the Olympics program. Three types of fencing weapons used at the Summer Games are the foil , epee and sabre . The three disciplines of fencing are named after the types of weapons used for the games. In all the three disciplines, individual and team competitions are held.

Fencing at the 2008 Summer Games: At the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing , fencing events will be held at the Olympic Green Fencing Gymnasium in the Chaoyang District . The events included in the fencing program are epee individual men, epee team men, foil individual men, sabre individual men, epee individual women, foil individual women, foil team women, sabre individual women, sabre team men and sabre team women. The events are scheduled to be staged from 9 th August to 17 th August . A total of 10 gold medals will be given away in fencing competition in the Beijing Summer Games . France, Russia, Italy, Germany and Hungary are the countries leading in the field of fencing.

Brice Guyart, Salvatore Sanzo, Andrea Cassara, Marcel Fischer, Wang Lei, Pavel Anatolevich Kolobkov, Aldo Montano, Zsolt Nemcsik and Vladislav Tretiak are the expected men contenders in the 2008 Summer Games .

Among women fencers, Maria Valentina Vezzali, Giovanna Trillini, Sylwia Gruchala, Timea Nagy, Laura Flessel-Colovic, Maureen Nisima, Mariel Zagunis, Tan Xue and Sada Jacobson are to be noticed during the twenty-ninth Summer Games .
