Marathon 10km (Women) is a swimming event, which will be introduced for the first time in the history of summer Olympics in 2008 Beijing Summer Games. In this particular event the swimmers need to swim for 10 kilometers at a stretch. The fastest to cover the 10 kilometers finishing line is declared the winner in Marathon 10km (Women) event. The swimmers mostly swim in the freestyle movement. These events are not held in the conventional pools of 50 meters length. The (Women) 10km Marathon is held in the lakes, where the other aquatic events like canoeing, yachting are held. At present, this format of sports is quite popular in Spain and China.
A maximum of 25 athletes will compete in the event of (Women) Marathon 10km in the 2008 Beijing Summer Games. Only 2 swimmers from one single country are allowed entries in this event. The top 10 finishers in the FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships will compete for the event in the Beijing Summer Games. This qualifying event will be held in Spain from April 29 to May 4, 2008. Another FINA Olympic Marathon Swim Qualifier is scheduled to be held in Beijing from May 31 to June 1, 2008. 9 to 10 top finishers from this event will also add to the list of contestants in Marathon 10km (Women) for Beijing Summer Games. Each of the top finishers in the 5 continental championships will also compete in the Beijing Summer Games for this particular event.
