Basketball (Women) in Olympics: Basketball (Women) got introduced in the Olympics in the year 1976, at the Montreal Olympics. The erstwhile Soviet Union was the first winner of the women's basketball event, defeating USA, although there were no playoffs. Bulgaria was the bronze medalist. Soviet Union reclaimed the title in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. However, USA did not participate in the Olympics that year. However, USA claimed the title in the Los Angeles Olympic in 1984, defeating Korea. From then on USA went on to win every single time, with the exception of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics when the Unified Team consisting of twelve independent nations defeated China.

Basketball (Women) in Beijing Summer Games 2008: Basketball (Women) promises to be one of the most attractive events of the Beijing Summer Games of 2008. 12 teams will participate in the event, including four from Europe, three from the America, two each from Africa and Asia and one from Oceania. The teams that have already qualified for the event are China, Australia, Mali, Korea, USA, Russia and New Zealand. The other teams will be selected from the Olympic Qualifying Tournament to be held in 2008. Women's Basketball in 2008 Beijing Summer Games will be held between 9th and 24th August 2008 at the Wukesong Indoor Stadium in Beijing.
