200m Freestyle (Women)

200m Freestyle (Women) is one of the major events of the Summer Games. Swimming has been a very popular sport throughout the world for years. But the categorization of the swimming events happened only from the late 19th century. The event of 200m Freestyle (Women) came into existence in the Summer Games of 1968. In this event the women swim for 200 meters in freestyle movement. The (Women) 200m Freestyle is one of the 13 swimming events to be held in the summer Olympics.

The swimming events of the Summer Games are held in pools of 50 meters length. To complete the freestyle (women) 200m, the swimmers need to make cover the swimming pool for 4 times. The fastest to cover the 200m distance is declared the winner of the event. The swimmers from many parts of the world take part in this event. The heats are held in the primary stage. The winners of these preliminary rounds are advanced to the semifinals and ultimately the event ends up in finals. The first three to reach the finishing point in the finals win the medals.

When this event was introduced in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, the bulk of medals were won by the US swimmers. The best timing in the 200m Freestyle (Women) is 1:57.65 minutes. Heike Friedrich of East Germany made this record in the 1988 South Korea Olympics.

In the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, the event of 200m Freestyle (Women) will start on 11th August in the evening session while the final of this event will be held in the morning session of 13th August.
