After the terrorist attacks on US in 2001, it was put on the receiving end of an ‘evil’ list particularly due to its possession of Nuclear weapons, which was seen as a serious threat to the world. Although the UN had since then hinted towards imposing certain sanctions of North Korea for the same, it was only after
North Korean Nuclear test in 2006 that the UN Security Council finally implemented the
sanctions on Pyongyang.
The sanctions included a set of financial sanctions tagged with an embargo on technological materials, luxury goods and militia. A few months later, North Korea realized that it was a difficult task to be at the receiving end of the sanctions and agreed on a six part talk. This was following North Korea’s withdrawal from the
Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 2003 and was attended by China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States apart from North Korea.
Currently
North Korea UN relations are looking brighter with North Korea welcoming changes and opening up to new dimensions of development and economic growth.
