There were certain factors behind the emergence of the North Korean Famine. One of the factors was a natural disaster caused by the unexampled flood in the 1990s. The other international factor that led to the maximization of the North Korean Famine was the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the the Soviet Union regime, North Korean economy banked on the friendly economical relation with the Soviet Union. Prior to the North Korean Famine, North Korea had a stable economy owing to the extensive industrialization of agriculture and aid from Soviet Union.
But with the downfall of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, North Korean economy suffered a major setback. North Korea experienced a poor agricultural and industrial productivity. Thus it became nearly impossible for the State of North Korea to counter the devastating North Korean flood. Consequently, the North Korean Famine resulted.
North Korea received foreign aids from major countries like China, USA. But it could not stop the massive death of North Korean citizens. The unofficial sources say the North Korean Famine resulted to the death of nearly 10% of the North Korean population.
