Carvings



Carvings in North Korea are traditional form of art, existent in the country since the prehistoric times. It still exists in the form of sculptures at present times. In fact, this creative form of art actually reflects the enriched art and culture of the North Korean land.

The most common form of Carvings found in pre-historic Korea is 'Rock Art', commonly called "Petroglyphs". Early Korean man had left them in unprotected state on the rock surfaces, in grinding, pecking or marking modes. Popularly known as 'Rock Carvings', a handful of these North Korean Carvings were seldom filled with colors, to enhance their overall beauty. In fact, not even a single painted Rock Carvings were found on North Korean mainland. All Carvings in North Korea were strictly devoid of hues.

The first North Korea Carving was discovered as many as 30 years ago, around 1970. Following by the first discovery, a number of such Carvings were detected at Gaejin-myon in Goryoung and Cheonjeon-ri, Daegok-ri and Unyang-myon in Yangjun-ri and Ulsan. Popular images curved and displayed on Carvings in North Korea include geometrical shapes, abstract matters, human beings and beasts along with their footprints, male and female genitals as symbols of fertility, stone dagger and Almighty God. Classified into abstract and naturalistic shapes, North Korea Carvings were quite unpopular and unknown till date, until extensive research works on this traditional form of North Korean art started in 1990. In fact, they display considerable connection with North East Asian artworks, reflecting uniqueness and individuality.
