Norfolk Island - Society and Culture is a reflection of Pitcaimer tradition, who have been inhabiting this Oceania island since the middle of the 19th century. This 35 sq. kilometer island to the east of Australia and north west of New Zealand is inhabited by about 2,100 people.
Norfolk Island People
Norfolk Island people comprise the Pitcaimers (descendants of Bounty mutineers), Polynesians, Australians, and New Zealanders. Norfolk Island religion is classified thus: Anglican Christians constitute 34.9% of the population, followed by 11.7% of Roman Catholics, 11.2% belonging to the Uniting Church in Australia, 2.8% of Seventh - Day Adventists, 6% of others, 15.2% following unspecified religions, and 18% not belonging to any faith.
English is the official Norfolk Island language. The other popular language spoken here is Norfolk, a mixture of Tahitian and 18th century English.
Norfolk Island Society
Norfolk Island was discovered by Captain James Cook in October 1774. It was named 'Norfolk' in honor of the Duchess of Norfolk. Thereafter, a number of expeditions have taken place to Norfolk Island and Phillip Island, located 6 km south of Norfolk. Norfolk Island was initially used for transporting convicts.
1856 onwards, the Pitcaimers, descendants of Bounty Mutineers started settlement in this island. The Pitcaimers had Tahitian wives resulting in a mixture of English and Polynesian cultures. Alongwith English a new 'Norfolk' language evolved.
35% of the local inhabitants are direct descendants of the mutineers of warship HMS Bounty. For easier identification they use their nicknames like Bubby, Diddles, Lettuce Leaf, Loppy, Spuddy in the local telephone directory.
Education for children between six and fifteen years is compulsory and free. Education in Norfolk Island is provided by the local Government.
Norfolk Island Culture
Being a blend of Polynesian and English people, Norfolk Island culture has its own unique characteristics. The ethnicity is preserved in their music, dances, art and crafts, and cuisine. Basket weaving is an important Norfolk Island handicraft activity.
This Oceania island is famous for its culinary delights. Mudda, Pilhai, and Hihi Pie are famous traditional Norfolk Island Cuisine.
