Norfolk Island Legislature is governed by the Commonwealth of Australia. Hon Geoffrey Gardner is the present speaker of the Legislature of Norfolk Island. The Legislative Assembly is the prime functionary of the Legislature of Norfolk Island.
The Legislative Assembly of Norfolk Island is governed by nine members. The powers and responsibilities of the Legislative Assembly are set by the Norfolk Island Act. The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association plays a major role in formulating the various rules and regulations for the Legislature of Norfolk Island.
Being an integral section of the Norfolk Island -Government and Politics, the Legislature of the place has the exclusive right to legislate various governmental affairs. However, the areas like acquisition of property, coinage, euthanasia, raising of defense forces, bills of industrial relations, fishing, immigration, social security, customs, quarantine, education and movable cultural objects cannot be handled by the Legislative Assembly of Norfolk Island. These areas should be approved by the Australian Ministry for territories and Administrator.
Since Norfolk Island is a territory of Australia hence in case of any confusion or conflict with the Governor-General of Australia the Australian Government holds the ultimate power that can overrule the norms of the Norfolk Island Legislature.
