Sokoto

Sokoto is an important Nigerian city located to the northwestern part of Nigeria, on the banks of the junction point of two rivers, Sokoto or Kebbi and Rima. Sokoto is one of the most historically important places of Nigeria in terms of colonial occupation. The geographical coordinates of Sokoto in Nigeria correspond to 13.7°North and 5.24° East. With the improving civic conditions and development, the population has grown to almost double the strength within a matter of sixteen years. The present population of Sokoto is around 601,893.

Tourist Attractions in Sokoto

Among the places of tourist interest in Sokoto, the king's palace is among the most visited ones. The king of Nigeria continues to be an important figure in terms of the religious faith of the indigenous people of the country. However, visit to his palace is not open at all times.
Special permission is required to be secured for visiting the king;'s palace. The other major place of tourist interest in Sokoto is the Shehu mosque.

Nigeria is a Muslim dominated country, and Sokoto is one of the most important centers for learning and practicing Islam. The 1840 Jihad of Sokoto led to the establishment of the head quarters of Sokoto Caliphate by Sheikh Uthman Danfodio.
