The name “Oyo” descended from Oyo Empire, which flourished in the region in 1830s. It was regarded as Oyo Kingdom's capital at that time. In 1991 the state of Osun was brought into existence from the eastern part of Oyo. As a result the size of the state was reduced.

During the middle of the 17th century the Yoruba people founded the Oyo Empire. The Oyo Empire was spread over a wide area that lies between Niger and Volta rivers.
