Oyo

Oyo is a state that lies in the western part of Nigeria. Oyo is bordered by Osun to the east, Benin Republic to its west, Kwara state to its north and Ogun to its south. In the northern side, Oyo state is covered by Yoruba Hills. Some part of Oyo is covered by the tropical rain forest.

The name “Oyo” descended from Oyo Empire, which flourished in the region in 1830s. It was regarded as Oyo Kingdom's capital at that time. In 1991 the state of Osun was brought into existence from the eastern part of Oyo. As a result the size of the state was reduced.

Ibadan is the capital of Oyo State. Oyo city that lies in the south western part of Nigeria, in the state of Oyo is regarded as a center for textiles. In Oyo there are many cotton weaving industries. Besides cotton weaving industries,
Oyo also has industries where tobacco processing is done. Trade in cocoa, palm products, tobacco, grains, cassava, cotton are done here.

During the middle of the 17th century the Yoruba people founded the Oyo Empire. The Oyo Empire was spread over a wide area that lies between Niger and Volta rivers. According to the Census report of 1995 the population of the city is estimated to stand at 2, 50,100. The local artisans of Oyo prepare leather goods.
