Maiduguri city, located on the bank of river Ngadda or Alo river, is the capital of the state of Borno. This Nigerian city is fundamentally a combination of the twin towns of Maiduguri and Yerwa. During the period of British occupation of Nigeria, Maiduguri was selected by the British authorities as the capital of the Bornu kingdom instead of Mofoni, which for so long had been the capital of the Borno state. Maiduguri was a mere market place before being converted to a British army base in 1908. Maiduguri city has two political units, the rural area of Maiduguri and the urban area of Yerwa. This division was done in the year 1957.
TRADE AND TRANSPORTATION IN MAIDUGURI
The chief means of transportation in Maiduguri is the the railways and it wasn't until 1964 that the city had this facility. The transportation facilities of
Maiduguri has opened up immense scopes for exportation and trade. Maiduguri earns a major part of its income from livestock and livestock products, crocodile skins, peanuts, gum arabic, and different sorts of local food products.
Maiduguri people comprise chiefly of the Shuwa people and the Muslim Kanari and also a good number of Nigerians who have converted to Christianity after the colonial invasion. The Chad Basin National Park is the only major place of tourist interest. There are about five hotels in Maiduguri for the accommodation facilities of the tourists including the Safari Hotel, the Deribe Motel, the Beach Guest House, the Maiduguri International Airport Hotel and the Aceta International Hotel.
