Katsina town is the capital of the state of Katsina and is located in the northern part of Nigeria, somewhat close to the Nigerian borders. The geographic coordinates of Katsina correspond to 13.00°North 7.60° East. The name Katsina was given to commemorate the name of the Princess of Daura who also happened to be the wife of King Janzama. Katsina is differently known as Kacinna and Katsena. The place is famous for the residence of the Hausa kings, called the Ambuttai. The place was the gathering spot of the rulers near Durby. Katsina is located at an important roadway junction, which is easily accessible from Maradi and Kano.
Katsina Economy
Katsina trades in a number of agricultural and pastoral products such as
peanuts, millets, sorghum, onions and other vegetables, indigo, peanuts, goats, sheep, cattle, poultry, and cotton. Recent development in the Katsina area has introduced the steel-rolling plant and vegetable oil mills. Other kinds of population in the area include weaving and dyeing cotton, pottery work, embroidery works, metal and leather works and calabashes.
Education in Katsina is fast developing and the Katsina Polytechnic college (1983) and federal and Islamic teacher-training colleges are attest to the educational improvement in this region.
