Enugu

Enugu is a city in Nigeria. It is the capital of the Enugu State. The city has an approximate population of 286,100. The city of Enugu is the center of coal and iron-ore mining. An industrially rich area, Enugu also has other flourishing industries like steel and cement, vegetable oil, food processing, and motor vehicle assemblage. The city is connected to the Port Harcourt by railway.

Location of Enugu

The city of Enugu is located in south-central Nigeria. It is situated at the bottom of the Udi plateau, on the railroad from Port Harcourt.
From Port Harcourt, it is 150 miles or 240 kms south-southwest. Enugu is positioned at the junction of roads approaching from Aba, Onitsha, and Abakaliki.

History of Enugu

The city of Enugu was founded in 1909. It grew up around a tiny coalfield. The railway lines connecting Enugu to Port Harcourt were completed in 1916, and those routes connecting the city to Lagos via Kaduna were finished in 1926. Enugu was the capital city of the proponent state of Biafra from 1967 to 1970, during the Nigerian Civil War, when the city was almost abandoned. Since then, it has recovered most of its earlier significance. The University of Nigeria established one of its campuses in Enugu as a auxiliary to the central university at Nsukka, situated at a distance of 70-km to the north of Enugu.

People of Enugu

The proportion of concentration of population in Enugu is about twice as much as the nationwide standard. The foremost communities of the city of Enugu are the southeastern Nigerians who speak the Igbo language. They are recognized for their tender and cordial nature. The people of Enugu are innovative, diligent and ingenious in nature. The people of Enugu are mostly reliant on a pastoral and agricultural economy. The bulk of the human resource in Enugu is engaged either in agriculture or in some agriculture related work.
