Asaba

Asaba is the capital city of Delta State and one of the most important cities of Nigeria. It is located on the western bank of the Niger river and is an important trans-African link between the Atlantic ocean and east Africa. The Asaba region lies very close to the two very important geographic coordinates, the Equator and the Meridian. The Atlantic ocean lies at a distance of some 100 miles to the north of the city.

The Asaba city is home to some 5,00,000 Nigerians belonging to various races. The Asaba people can be basically categorized as the Nnebisi, the Ugboma and the Ezeanyanwu. The Ugboma were the earliest settlers in the Asaba region, followed by the Ezeanyanwu,
a descendant of the royal Ezechima community in the Niger region. In this part, there are also considerable number of Urhobo, Isoko, Itsekiri, Hausa, Ijaw, and Yoruba people.

The UAC Nigeria (UACN) PLC is an important oil producing company in the region. The Delta state is important to the economy of Nigeria and it is because of this that Asaba had once been chosen by the British colonists as the protectorate of Nigeria. At that point of time, UAC Nigeria PLC was known as Royal Niger Company.
