The Summer Olympics have always been privileged with the participation of Niger at the Olympics since 1964 with the exception for 1976 and 1980. The 1972 Summer Olympics proved to be the best for Niger. The only medal bagged by Niger happened in the 1972 Summer Olympic Games. Issaka Daborg won the only bronze medal for Niger at the Olympics 1972 in the light welterweight boxing. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) code specified for Niger is NIG. Niger has never participated in any of the Winter Olympic Games.
The 2000 Summer Olympic Games saw the participation of Niger women athletes for the first time in the history of Summer Olympics since the participation of Niger at the Olympics in 1964. The Niger women athletes participated in 2000 Summer Olympics were Haissa Ali Garba and Balkissa Ouhoumoudou. While Haissa participated in the Women's 400 meters race, Balkissa competed for 100 meters breaststroke swimming. Though neither of them could advance after Round I in their respective sectors, they opened the doors for the further participation of the Niger women athletes in the Olympics. The 2004 Summer Olympics was privileged with the participation of one more Niger woman athlete Salamtou Hassane. She competed in Women's 400 meters race (though could not advance after Round I).
The major contingent of athletes sent by Niger at the Olympics participated in the boxing and marathon. In its first participation at the Olympics, Niger fielded two boxers Dary Dasuda and Issaka Dabore. But lately, Niger has been fielding its athletes in sports like judo, swimming, etc.
