The Niger national rugby union team is the representative of the country of Niger in international rugby union. The International Rugby Board (IRB) has incorporated Niger as its member. Till date the Niger national rugby union team has never taken part in a Rugby World Cup tournament. But, this African nation has put up prestigious fights in the rugby tournaments held in Africa. In the year of 2006, the Niger national rugby union team has performed exceptionally well. In the CAR Castel Cup in 2006, the Niger national rugby union team emerged as the runner up. In the final match, they were defeated by Tanzania in spite of a brave fight.
A feather was added to the crown of the Niger national rugby union team when they emerged as the winner in the Confederation of African Rugby's Castel Beer Rugby Cup 2006. This tournament was held in Niamey, Niger. In the entire round-robin format against all three of their opponents - Burkina Faso, Mali and Tchad, the Niger national rugby union team went unbeaten. Niger had convincing wins over Tchad and Mali. Though, Burkina Faso put up a strong resistance, the rugby players of Niger national rugby union team proved much stronger.
The competitive spirit of the Africa's developing rugby nation, Niger was even praised by the IRB Regional Development Manager Jean-Luc Barthes.
