WHO-Niger

The joint efforts of WHO-Niger in health-related issues of the country have resulted in the reduction of the death rates considerably. When WHO-Niger joined hands with a pledge to improve the healthcare conditions of the country, the situation was indeed pitiable and grave. People were dying out of various diseases, not in numbers but in volumes, and no remedial measures or actions were known to the government to prevent such mass loss of lives in Niger.

According to the Niger Health ministry reports, as many as 614 cases of Meningococcal disease surfaced in the country from 1st of January to 26th February 2006, out of which 44 were lost ones. In fact, Meningococcal disease acquired the shape of an epidemic, affecting the two adjacent districts of Guidan-Roumdji and Madarounfa as well. The interference of WHO in Niger into the scenario brought in vaccines and this immunization campaign helped controlling the situation adequately.

With the outbreak of severe Cholera in Niger from 13th to 28th July 2005, a total of 49 cases were reported officially, among which there were 5 death cases. The Tahoua region was the worst affected district this time. However, the government with aids from WHO implemented preventive measures in the area, including restraining market places and the beginning of health education with respect to safe drinking water. This helped in improving the situation considerably.

Indeed, the healthcare activities and measures undertaken by WHO in tackling the health-related issues in Niger are praiseworthy. This has come as a boon to the nation, where the mortality rates have reduced extensively and people becoming more and more conscious about personal health and hygiene.
