Siuna is a municipality in the northern region of Nicaragua. It has the highest population in the country. The total number of inhabitants in Siuna is 80,000 among which 68,000 people belong to the 152 rural community of the region. Throughout the
Siuna municipality there are 17 urban areas where 12,000 people live.
Location of Siuna
The municipality of Siuna is located in the northern part of the Atlantic Autonomous Region of Nicaragua. The geographical position of Siuna is at a latitude of 13?43’48” N and a longitude of 84?46’12” W.
History of Siuna
Siuna had always been popular for its mines. Long before, the area around Siuna was filled with gold deposits. From 1930s to 1950s a large scale of gold mining operation took place, which made a great difference in the whole social and economical structure of Siuna. In this regard it must be mentioned that this huge process had caused serious health and environmental problems such as water and air pollution as well as deforestation.
Attractions of Siuna
- The Bosawas Reserve is located near Siuna. The 8,000 km stretched reserve is the largest rainforest in Central America. The beautiful forest is considered as one the most popular tourist attractions in this region. in 1991 Bosawas was labeled as a National Reserve and in 1998 was included as a Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO.
- Siuna is also popular as a university town of the country. There are several universities located in this region where students are provided with high standard education system.
Agriculture and livestock production are currently the main industries in Siuna. Most of the inhabitants of the municipality earn their living by these means.
