Masaya City Guide

Masaya is a city in western Nicaragua. It is Nicaragua's fourth most populous citiy and culturally known as "City of Flowers". It is home to Nicaragua's first national park, named Masaya Volcano National Park which has two active volcanos and five craters.


 

The cultural traditions of Masaya have earned it the title of Crib of national folklore. The city has also been rewarded with the title of Cultural Legacy of the Nation’ and Capital of National Folklore’. Masaya in Nicaragua was the home of the native tribes of the Dirianes. After Masaya became a city, it became more and more important. The Masaya Lagoon encircles the city. This beautiful Masaya lagoon enhances the beauty of the city.

Strong influence of the Spanish culture can be found in the city. Masaya Volcano National Park in Masaya boasts of a big volcano which attracts large number of tourists. This is a very big area with rocks, craters and hills. The volcano can be easily accessed by a road. One of the craters of the volcano is always active and emits fumes and smoke. The other craters are covered with dense forests. Spectacular views can be had from the craters.

The visitors can enjoy hiking and trekking in the park. The park also has a small museum which gives a lot of facts about the volcano to the tourists. The old cultural markets of Masaya boast of variety of shops selling furniture, hammocks, clothes, shoes and musical instruments.
