Leon

The city of Leon is one of the oldest colonial city in Central America, founded by the Spanish conqueror, “Don Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba” in 1523. It was the capital city of Nicaragua till 1851, until Managua became the capital. Leon is the gateway and transportation hub to the cotton trading center for the suburb agricultural region. Population of Leon is approximately 390,000. It is situated in the picturesque northeastern side of Nicaragua, bordering the Pacific ocean.

The colonial city of Leon boasts of a rich cultural history. Among the tourist attractions in Leon there are numerous architecture marvels, churches, museums, volcanoes and beaches. Leon has always enjoyed a place of prominence from both economic and cultural perspective.

Before the Spanish this city was predominated by a local indigenous tribe known as the Sutiaba tribe. Till now the Sutiaba neighborhood in Leon still preserves the original character. Many old monuments, and historical sites are reminiscent of the past glory. One such tree known as “El Tamarindon” is a 381 years old tamarind tree, used as gallows by the Spanish conquerors. The San Fransisco Sutiaba Church and The Indigenous Sutiaba Museum bear replicas of the past. Other churches that speak volumes of Leon architecture are the La Merced, El Calvario and La Recoleccion. Tourists also frequent the Museum of Legends and Traditions to catch a glimpse about the legends and culture of this city.

Leon harbors dramatic beaches along the coast of the Pacific. Tourists enjoy the sun, the sea and the beaches of Poneloya and Las Penitas. Regular beach activities include sunbathing, swimming and surfing. Juan Venado Island abounds in mangrove forests and is a house to various colorful birds and animals.

The hot springs of San Jacinto is a collection of boiling mud holes which attract tourists every year. Maribios Range is a chain of volcanoes which cuts through Leon and is a fascinating attraction for travelers. This chain also has some active volcanoes, while others are nascent or dormant. Puerto Sandino, a small fishing port is along the pacific coastline. It provides an excellent site for surfing.

Leon has good hotels like Hotel America and Hotel El Convento, which provide warm and cozy accommodation. Local restaurants like El Victoriano serves as an excellent eatery. Other eateries dot the coastline providing lip smacking local dishes. Small boats commonly known as Kayaks can be used for trips to Juan Venedo island.

The indigenous natural beauty in Leon is still untouched by the vices of modern civilization.
