La Virgen Estate, is one of the two farms that make up Ramacafe Fine Estate Coffees. It is situated in the city of Esteli in the Nueva Segovia region of Nicaragua. The farm size is a gigantic 44 hectares, which includes 17 hectares of coffee plantation. La Virgen in Esteli is located in a high elevation area which is mountainous. The highest point allows a bird's eye view of the fertile green valleys stretching for miles altogether. This farm was bought by Udo Hermann who arrived in Nicaragua with the German Technical Cooperation during the late 80's. He fell in love with the simple and the virgin nature of this land and settled in the province of Esteli. With cooperation from his friends he set up a coffee business. He built a farmhouse and adapted perfectly to the conditions of the farm.
At Ramacafe, of which La Virgen Estate is a part, provides good living conditions to the workers. A clean and modern kitchen was built where the workers could enjoy their lunch. They were provided with new living quarters and schools for their children. This was a clever strategy to retain the work force in order to maintain a high quality in coffee production. Medical facilities were also made available to them.
La Virgen Estate, produces varieties like Canturra Estrella, Catuai, Bourbon and some Maracatu and Catmor. The processing system includes first washing and then getting it sun dried. The lot size is 12 bags. According to the international jury the quality coffee has scored 90.03. The unique flavor and the coffee quality at La Virgen Estate, has made them win the 'Cup of Excellence' award. La Virgen coffee estate in Esteli, ranks seventh in the world.
It has earned laurels from all sectors. The coffee produced in La Virgen estate has been described as very elegant, aromatic, spicy, fruity, velvety with a rich body and also fresh and crisp. During the coffee picking season 120 workers can be seen working here.
