Located 150 km from Managua, Esteli is a small city in the northern zone of Nicaragua. It lies in the north of Leon and south of Madriz. After Matagalpa, Esteli is the second largest city in this region. Situated 800 meters above sea level, Esteli enjoys a comparative cooler climate. From Managua, Esteli is a two hour drive.
Esteli, is the main gateway to the Las Segovias region, making it the commercial capital of all kinds of business activities and transportation in this region. This city is famous for tobacco plantations and factories which are producers of high quality cigars.
Archeological excavations in and around Esteli has produced ancient petroglyphs dating back to more than 1000 years. These were found in Las Pintas, 3kms from Esteli. Twenty to thirty thousand years old fossils of gigantic mammals have been found in Pueble Nuevo.
San Juan de Limay is an interesting tourist spot in Esteli. An hour long drive, through the muddy road will take you to this place. Beautiful soapstone statues are made and sold here at a reasonable price.
La Estanzuela, is an astounding waterfall located 5 km south of Esteli. Tourists can enjoy a swim in the pond underneath the waterfall and talk a stroll round it to absorb nature. Adventure seekers can also trek or hike to this spectacular tourist spot. Nature is at its best in the innumerable mountains and hills covered with trees. Moroponte, Tomabu and La Mocuana are great places to visit.
Esteli, has still retained its indigenous traditions in the form of arts and crafts. The Ducuale Grande is a crafts workshop as well as a community center. Thirteen women in this center constantly creates craft in the same style using the same materials and the old indigenous inhabitants. The visitors the observe the complete and elaborate production process.
The Ecological Park at Cantagallo in Estilo is a heavenly abode for all the nature lovers. The mountain, Cantagallo, is covered with thick pine forests, a small lagoon, steep cliffs and variety of orchids.
The Estelimar Science Park, Estilo is more of an information center for the tourists visiting this part. It provides information about different topics in both written and visual aids. It houses an internet cafe and a learning center and is open to public free of cost.
Casa de Cultura Calmecalt is an archaeological museum located in front of the central park in Pueblo Nuevo 60 kms from Esteli. This museum showcases exclusive archaeological pieces found in surrounding areas. Other places of tourist interest in Esteli are Casa Esteli, Natural Reserve La Patasta, Miraflor Natural Reserve and the Historical ex combatants museum.
Esteli, is one of the well known producers of finest quality of cigars. Esteli Cigarros, is one of the many cigar factories which the tourists can visit and see how things are done. Cuban quality cigars are produced in these factories.
