El Castillo is a town of Nicaragua, famous for the fortress El Castillo de la Inmaculada Concepcion de Maria. The town came into existence after the fort was built by the Spanish in 1700 and was named after it. The tranquil and beautiful town offers the magnificent fort, excellent scenic beauty along with several impressive activities.
Location of El Castillo
The town of El Castillo is located on the bank of the Rio San Juan near San Carlos. The town can only be reached from San Carlos by taking a boat. It is situated 250 km south-east of Managua, the capital of Nicaragua.
History of El Castillo
El Castillo has a very rich history. The fort had been built by the Spanish in 1675 as to protect the inland cities from the pirates. San Juan River was a very convenient rout that was often followed by the pirates.
