Chinandega Travel


Chinandega is nestled in the northeastern corner of Nicaragua, bordering the Honduras and the Pacific Ocean. The was set up around a central park with a large church. This beautiful city is endowed with many beautiful churches all of them currently being renovated by the COEN foundation. Chinandega has undergone transformation from a small town during Spanish colonization to a commercial hub of the present times. The city has a good connection with Port of Corinto and the city of Leon. Agricultural products are traded from here. It is a two hours drive from Managua.

Cotton cultivation in the fertile soil of Chinandega mainly brought wealth to this region. Large sugar cane plantation rule the landscape in modern times. Flor-de-Cana, Nicaragua's finest rum is produced in this region.

Chinandega is accessible through an efficient network of roads, connecting it to Managua and also to Leon. Frequent bus services are also available. The more remote beaches and areas can also be reached by bus.

Chinandega is endowed with historical port cities situated amidst beautiful estuaries. El Realejo is one of the well known historical port cities, which is connected to the Pacific ocean via Dona Paula estuary. Mangrove forests border the sides of these estuaries. Kayaking through this mangrove allows the tourists to take a calm cruise while savoring the natural splendor. There is a municipal showroom, exhibiting some archaeological findings from this region. Visiting the significant ruins of the San Francisco Convent and the San Benito church are a must. The Paso Caballos Estuary, is another beautiful estuary, which separates port Corinto from the mainland. This estuaries provide long pristine, uninhabited beaches. Tourists enjoy swimming and big game fishing in these areas. These estuaries support huge mangrove system, most of them fairly unexplored. Dolphins and sea turtles are a common sight.

A cluster of volcanic mountain is located in the east of the city of Chinandega. Nicaragua's highest volcano San Cristobal is located in this region. These volcano cluster provides thrilling adventure to the hikers. The Consiguna Volcano in Chinandega, is another imposing volcano in the northwestern point. The large crater has been turned into a lake. Numerous hot springs and local wetlands shelter a variety of animals and migratory birds.

The small town of El Viejo close to Chinandega, is well known for its local gastronomical delights and also for magnificent The Menor Bascilica, a colonial church. Delightful local cuisine are prepared by the local inhabitants. Some specialties are include rosquillas and cajetas. The fruit toncua, is unique to this region. It is similar to papaya and is eaten with honey. The Menor Bascillica is a 17th century colonial church which exudes warmth from its wooden ceilings and richly carved interiors.
