Bluefields Travel


Bluefields is an important but a laid back Caribbean port. It is located on the shores of a coastal bay in front of the Caribbean Sea. This small port city is named after the Dutch pirate Abraham Blauvelt, who hid in the bay's waters in the early 17th century. Bluefields were neither explored nor occupied by the Spanish conquerors due to thick forests. The inhabitants here are mostly Mestizo but there is a mix of Miskito, Creole and smaller communities like Garifuna, Chinese, Sumu and Ramas. Hardwood, seafood, shrimp and lobster are exported from this Caribbean port. This historical city of Bluefields was rebuilt after it was destroyed by Hurricane Joan in 1988. The main languages of Bluefields are English and Creole.

Bluefields is the past was known for its attractive historic architecture, which was devastated to ruins by the hurricane of 1988. Though rebuilding has taken place, the original essence of the architecture hasn't been revived. The municipal jurisdiction of Bluefields has several municipal headquarters and rural communities. Bluefields and Racine became sister cities in 1973 as a part of a Wisconsin-wide effort to support the then new Nicaraguan government and contribute to the country's speedy economic development.

The temperature of Bluefields is hot and humid throughout the year. During the rainy season, it experiences very heavy rainfall. The biggest cultural event in Bluefields is the Palo de Mayo celebrations. A month long celebration takes place in colorful pomp and splendor. It begins on first of May to celebrate the advent of Spring. The festival originated in the nineteenth century. The black population mainly immigrants from Jamaica took over the European custom and incorporated their rhythms and dances thus creating a unique cultural expression full of energy and colors. Dancers dance around a pole twisting their bodies and waving colored ribbons in their bright attire.

Tourists can take excursions to the Pearl Lagoon and Miskito villages. Traveling to Bluefields can take some time. To reach this port city you have to partially travel over water. Boat rides are available from Mercado Mayoreo in Managua to El Rama. The next day another boat ride from El Rama takes the tourists to Bluefields. However, this tour can be an enriching and and enlivening experience for the leisure tourists. Daily flights are available from Managua to Bluefields.

Bluefields is a picturesque Caribbean port isolated by Carribean Sea on one side and a mountain range on the other. The virgin forests abounds in lush flora and fauna.
