The history of Nicaragua literature offers a major effect of Spain in its culture and literature. Ruben Dario, Gioconda Belli and Earnesto Cardenal are the renowned names in the world of Nicaragua literature. 'Macho Rato', also known as 'El G se', is considered to be the the first primary work of Nicaragua literature. It is a famous comedy drama that was published in the 17th century. This play was written in Castilian and Nahuatl languages apart from Spanish. Its simply interesting to know that several revolutionary leaders wrote famous poetries, which were popular worldwide. Among these talented revolutionary leaders, Tom Borge, the Head of the State Security and President Daniel Ortega requires to be mentioned. Ruben Dario is regarded as the most popular poet of Nicaragua for his informal language form and use of unconventional literary forms. Ruben Dario is almost an iconic figure in the Nicaragua literature. His original name was Felix Ruben Garcia Sarmiento and is often regarded as the 'Prince of Spanish-American literature'. In oder to honor him, his birthplace was renamed as Dario. Even the Ruben Daro National theater is also named to honor him. Ruben Dario is also regarded as the "Father of Modernism" for guiding the modernised literary movement towards the end of the 19th century.
