President of Nicaragua is a post of high responsibility and challenge, as it is the duty of guiding an emergent economy through all sorts of crises. The Nicaraguan President is responsible for his countries overall policy making as well as the implementation of those policies. Although the popular election of presidents in Nicaragua started in 1984 yet the country has seen presidents from 1854.

Almost all of these people have held the important office twice excepting Fruto Chamorro, William Walker, Luis Somoza Debayle, Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, Arnoldo Alemán and Enrique Bolaños. Violeta Barrios de Chamorro has the distinction of being the first woman to be Nicaraguan head of state. Nicaragua has been lead by Government Junta on five occasions they were composed in the following manner:
- Government Junta composed of: Maximo Jerez and Tomás Martínez
- Government Junta composed of: Gregorio Juarez and Rosalio Cortés
- Revolutionary Government Junta composed of: Eduardo Montiel and Jose Santos Zelaya
- National Government Junta composed of: Roberto Martinez Lacayo and Fernando Agüero and Edmundo Paguaga Irias with Alfonso Lovo Cordero
- Government Junta of National Reconstruction composed of: Daniel Ortega Saavedra and Sergio Ramírez Mercado, Violeta Barrios de Chamorro,Alfonso Robelo, Moisés Hassán Morales, Rafael Angel Cordova Rivas, Arturo Cruz
Currently Nicaragua is being lead under the able leadership of the very charismatic Daniel Ortega Saavedra, in chair for the second term.
