The
forest of Nicaragua covers an area of 5.5 million hectares distributed into Caribbean rainforest, Pacific dry forest, upland forest of pine and mountainous broadleaf forest. Among the total forest area 2.5 million hectares of land is covered by timber forest, which is used for commercial purpose. There are nearly 9,000 species of vascular plants, which has certain medical values. Shrubs, fern, orchids and all are found in some of the places in the country.

The wide variety of
animal species in Nicaragua can be classified into the following categories:
- Birds: There are more than 700 bird species living in the country. Some of these birds are migratory and the rest exist within the country. The wide range of birds includes pelicans, quetzal, vulture, trogons, finches, hummingbirds, kingfisher, gulls and many more.
- Mammals: Nearly 176 mammal species exist in Nicaragua including jaguar, puma, ocelot, howler monkey, spider monkey, tapirs, deer, anteaters and many more.
- Marine Animals: A wide range of sweet water and salt water fish and other marine animals exists in the various water bodies in and around the country. Whales, dolphins, sea turtles and various species of fish including angelfish, chromis, damselfish, flounder, rays, sharks and all.
- Reptiles: Black and green iguanas, green basilisks, caiman, crocodile and snakes are some of the main reptiles existing in the forests of the country.
- Insects: Huge variety of insects are found in Nicaragua including different types of butterflies, ants, grasshoppers, bugs, caterpillars and many more.
The ecosystem of the country is so huge and diverse that many of the Nicaragua flora and fauna are still undiscovered and unknown.
