Nicaragua currency is the Nicaraguan Gold Cordoba. The abbreviation for the Cordoba is NIO. Prices in Cordobas are connoted with the letter 'C' and a dollar sign (C$). In spite of this, US dollar is also accepted everywhere in this country. Travelers to this country can pay in dollars and receive their change in Cordobas. A hundred centavos make one NIO. Coins can be obtained in 5, 10, 25 and 50 centavos. NIO1 and NIO5 coins are common in Nicaragua currency. Notes are available in groupings of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 NIO. Money can be exchanged at the banks, foreign exchange bureaus and also at the airport.
Money can also be obtained from different ATM machines located in cities like Chinandega, Esteli, Granada, Jinotega etc.
Bank notes are also common in Nicaragua currency. Common denominations in bank notes are 500, 100, 50, 20 and 10. Less used denominations are the 25, 10, 5 and 1 bank notes. Nicaragua has no import or export restrictions on its currency, though, amounts greater than US$10,000 or an equivalent must be declared.
