Radio broadcasting is the cheapest and the quickest means of communication in the country of Nepal till today. Nepal is a country filled with mountains so radio broadcasting proved to be a very effectual way of transmission of the news. Radio Nepal not only catered news to the people but also it proved to be the vehicle for enlightening the common people and amusing them.
The geography of the country of Nepal contains hilly features and so the people of the remote villages faced problems to avail the newspapers due to problem in proper circulation. Illiteracy was also an important issue in the country. So Radio Nepal has been the most popular means of spreading the news in the country.
Establishment of Radio Nepal took place on 1st April, in the year 1951. In the beginning the transmission was restricted to a time period of 4 hours and 30 minutes and it was transmitted through a 250 Watt SW transmitter. The capacity of the Nepal Radio has increased in the passing time. At present the programs in radio are quite diversified.
Radio Nepal broadcasts its programs on Medium Wave, Short Wave and also on FM frequencies. The broadcast in the regular basis occupies a time of 16 hours each day. On the public holidays the time of the broadcast is extended for 2 more hours. The first FM channel in Kathmandu, FM Kathmandu, which covers the valley of the capital city and the adjacent places, was first started in the year 1995 from Singh Durbar in Kathmandu.
