Mahendra Sanskrit University was established in 1986. Around 1980s, the Government of Nepal, came up with the idea of Multi University System. Before that there was only Tribhuvan University in Nepal. According to it each university will be having unique nature, content and function. Thus Mahendra Sanskrit University was set up.
The objective of Nepal's Mahendra Sanskrit University was to give a systematized Sanskrit education and to preserve as well as promote the language. It also aimed at establishing scholars in Sanskrit, who can safeguard Sanskrit culture and interpret books and classical thoughts written thousands of years ago in the language of Sanskrit. The University also expected its scholars to comprehend subjects like Ayurveda, Jyautisha, Nature Cure and Yogic Sciences. Another objective of this university was to foster the knowledge of Sanskrit among all the parts of Nepalese society.
Some modern Subjects like Nepali, English, Maths, Economics and Political Science are also taught here keeping in mind the demands of the society. Mahendra Sanskrit University of Nepal offers intermediate or Uttar Madhyama, Bachelors or Shastri, Master's or Acharya and Doctoral courses in Classical and Modern subjects.
King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev is the Chancellor of the University. Pro Chancellor is Minister of Education. The main office is situated at Beljhundi, Dang, in Nepal. Though set up in 1986, the University has 12 constituent Vidyapeethas and 13 campuses under it.
