Nepal Stock Exchange was previously known as the Securities Exchange Center in Nepal. The Nepal Stock Exchange was established in 1993 with the objective that the capital markets might grow full fledged. Before he Securities Exchange Center turned into the Stock Exchange, it dealt only with the job of underwriting, brokering, market making for government bonds, public issue management and other types of financial dealings.
The Nepal Stock Exchange or NEPSE is basically a non-profit organization which operates under the jurisdiction of Securities Exchange Act, 1983. The chief objective of the Stock Exchange at Nepal is to impart free liquidity and marketability towards the Nepal government. The Stock Exchange in Nepal also works for the facilitation of the transactions in the realm of trading through the intermediaries of the market, its members and the brokers. The trading floor was inaugurated in the year 1994 on the 13th January.
The authorized capital of the Nepal Stock Exchange is equal to fifty million rupees. The major share-holders of the Stock Exchange of Nepal are the government of Nepal, Nepal Industrial Development Corporation and the Nepal Rastra Bank. There are nine members constituting the board of directors, among which, six are government nominees and two are the licensed members. The Nepal Stock Exchange General Manager is the Ex-officio director of the board.
