Most of the Nauruan People have a mixed ancestry of Micronesia and Polynesian seafarers. They trace their descent on the female side. Nauru People used to live in groups. They usually formed clans or tribes. But only two tribes out of 12 could survive in the 20th century. However people who belong to other ethnic groups also live in Nauru. Europeans, Chinese and Pacific Islanders also inhabit Nauru.
These People in Nauru have deep respect for their tradition. They have their own believes. They believe in a land of spirit called Buitani. They also believe in a female deity Eijebong and goddess worship. However most of the people are Christian. While some of them are Protestants others follow Roman Catholicism. People of Nauru speak in Nauruan English, both the official languages.
Nauru People are patrons of art. Poetry is widely practiced by people. Dance and music are integrated into the lifestyle of the people of Nauru. The local music of Nauru is very rhythmic. The handicraft products made by them are enough to awestruck visitors. Not only that. These people are also sport lovers. Their preferred games are football, softball, cricket, golf, sailing, soccer etc.
Since Nauru enjoys a tropical climate, cotton clothes are worn by the people. They wear short trousers and light shirts. The food habit of these people is not very heavy due to the temperature. Fish and meat are quite preferred. Other than the Christmas cake, various traditional desserts like coconut mousse, banana spreads and coconut shakes is very favorite to them. Ice creams made of ground coconut and fruit's light and flavored milk are much liked by people. Nauru people are hospitable, fun loving and trustworthy.
