Nauru Politics


Politics in Nauru took a new turn after the country earned independence in 1968. The country had 8 changes in government since 1968. Nauru Politics follow the political system of Great Britain. The Parliament of Nauru is a unicameral one. The Parliament has got 18 members. The president, speaker and deputy speaker is being elected by the parliament. The smallest Republic of the world, Nauru, is a member of British Commonwealth. In 1999 it got full membership of Untied Nations.

The parliament in Nauru is elected for a period of 3 years. The president, speaker and deputy speaker are all elected by the parliament. The president is the head of the state as well as the government. Five members of the parliament are again selected by the president to form the cabinet.

Three political parties that are active in Nauru are Democratic Party, Nauru First and Center Part.

The executive power in the country lies with the government. The legislative powers also lie with the government. But the judiciary is independent. The country's economy is mostly controlled by the government. Nauru Phosphate Corporation, the national airline as well as the investments in phosphate and the royalties associated with phosphate mining are owned by the government.
